Some commonly asked questions by prospective members:
HOW MANY MEMBERS DO YOU CURRENTLY HAVE?
The number of members does tend to fluctuate but the membership currently stands at 35. It is fair to say there is a hard core of approximately 30 members who attend the majority of rehearsals, concerts and music festivals.
WHEN AND WHERE DOES THE CHOIR PERFORM?
Quite simply any time and anywhere! The Choir takes part in all kinds of events but public appearances are in the main at concerts and music festivals. The Choir has travelled to Spain and Malta, and there have been visits to various parts of the country including Newquay, Portsmouth, Guildford, Whitby, Harrogate, London, South Wales and Scotland. The Choir is often asked to sing at weddings and the magnificent sound of the Choir has proved to be something ‘very special’ to families.
WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC DOES THE CHOIR PERFORM?
The Choir’s extensive repertoire of well over 250 items includes secular & religious music, classical opera, standard male voice choir arrangements, folk songs, love songs, show songs, gospel music and popular songs.
DOES THE CHOIR HAVE A CONSTITUTION AND RULES?
Yes. As a registered charity the Choir has a ‘Constitution and Rule’ booklet, which incorporates a Child Protection policy. The principal objective of the Choir is “to educate the public in the Arts and in particular the art of singing by assisting in, and taking part in, concerts and similar activities.”
WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?
As a regular and valued member you will receive tuition in choral singing to enable you to become part of the ‘family’, which is Worrall Male Voice Choir. You will receive, at minimal cost, a uniform and you will also qualify for free, or in some cases subsidised, coach travel to engagements. On those occasions, which necessitate an overnight stay, you will be provided with accommodation at a very reasonable cost.
HOW DOES MY FAMILY FIT INTO ALL THIS?
Wives, partners and members of the family are encouraged to support the Choir. Everyone is welcome to attend any of the Choir functions, including those where overnight stays are required. They are also welcome to assist in fund raising, and provides administrative and sales support at concerts.
WHAT COSTS ARE INVOLVED?
The annual subscription is £100.00 for all members. The Choir also asks for a contribution towards the provision of a uniform, this currently stands at £45.00.
WHAT ABOUT REHEARSALS?
There is an expectation that a member should attend as many Choir rehearsals as they possibly can - the Choir rehearses on Mondays and Fridays (7.30pm to 9.15pm) at the Worrall Independent Chapel. Towngate Road, Worrall, Sheffield. We do not expect attendance at every rehearsal, so don't be put off if you can only attend once a week, we won't turn you away.
WHAT IF I HAVE NEVER SUNG BEFORE?
That is no problem - the chances are that you have sung in the bath and other such locations! Give our Musical Director the opportunity to train you and, provided you are not ‘tone deaf’, you will be an asset to the Choir. All that is asked of you is that you sing in tune and blend with those around you to enhance the unique sound, which is Worrall Male Voice Choir.
WHAT ABOUT READING MUSIC?
You will not be expected to sight read music but it if you already have an interest in music it is likely you will follow the music more easily. You will receive tuition about reading music and soon will understand what all those black and white dots across the black lines mean.
CAN I SING WITH ANOTHER CHOIR?
Whilst the Committee does not encourage members to sing with other choirs, there is no rule in this Choir’s constitution that disallows membership of another choir. It is preferred that all energy and commitment is given to Worrall Male Voice Choir.
DO I HAVE TO SING ALONE?
You will never be expected to sing solo, unless of course you are proficient and wish to do so. The initial three months is a probationary period when there is opportunity for you, and the Musical Director, to assess your progress and ascertain your capabilities. Whilst there is no specific voice test, you may, at the discretion of the Musical Director be asked to carry out a voice test after the three month probationary period to ensure that you can sing to the required standard. It is important you are comfortable with your position within the Choir.
WHO DO I CONTACT FOR MORE INFORMATION?
Simply contact the Secretary or the Musical Director. If you want to see what happens at rehearsals you will always be made welcome on any Monday or Friday evening.
